Hired an IEC? Willing to Be Interviewed?

Jill Smith, a PhD candidate in sociology at Brandeis University, is researching a dissertation on the role of independent educational consultants (IEC's) in the college admissions process. (“IEC's" refer to private college counselors that many parents in hire to help their children apply to college.)

She is looking to interview parents who have hired IEC's to work with their children this year or in recent years. Interviews will take approximately 45 minutes and all interviewees will remain anonymous.

Family Movie Day and Night at the West Newton Cinema February 21 & 22, 2012
Special $6.00 price includes a MOVIE, POPCORN, and SODA. See The Muppets or Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Tickets will be sold on the day of the event at the West Newton Cinema at 1296 Washington St. This is a very popular event and tickets may sell out. Ticket sales will begin at 10:00 AM for the Movie Day on Tuesday and Wednesday with movies starting at 11:00 AM. Mayor's Village Summit Revitalizes Community Development

Villages of NewtonMayor Warren's Village Summit held December 4, 2011 was well attended with participants including local residents, business owners, city officials with representatives from at least 10 of 13 Newton villages.
Topics covered during the Summit included, establishing a Neighborhood Area Council, revitalizing civic engagement with Village Day events, working with City Hall, and connecting with local businesses.
When the group broke into discussion groups by Village, the results were impressive as each group stated specific short and long term goals for their village.

Holiday Decoration Contest Could Bring Funds to Newton Public Schools

The Newton Patch is holding a contest this month that could bring a big chunk of change to Newton Public Schools.

The contest asks locals around the country to submit photos of their houses all decked out for the holidays. Residents can submit photos from now until December 26, 2011. Once they submit, residents in the community can vote for their favorite houses online. The top 24 houses in the country receive $500 toward their December electric bill and the grand prize winner wins $100,000 for his/her home school district, no strings attached. read more »

Registration is now underway for fall classes through Newton Community Education, and we have lots for offer high school students.

For the college bound we offer SAT prep classes for the Verbal and Math SAT 1 tests. We also offer a College Essay Writing class and two new talks for college-bound kids with special needs and/or special interests: So you think you can Sing, Dance, Act, or Paint in College, for kids considering careers in the arts, and Post-secondary and College Options for Students with Learning Differences. New Year's Eve Fun at Newton City Hall

Join Mayor Setti Warren to celebrate the New Year with a fun-filled afternoon of free entertainment on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Newton City Hall is the place to be this New Year's Eve with four fabulous family entertainers: The American Chinese Art Society Dancers, popular singer Wayne Potash, The Newton Family Singers, and Big Joe the Storyteller. There is also free face painting to add to the festivities! read more »

Newton Centre Ice Rink Grand Opening

Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Newton Centre Ice Skating Rink! Mayor Setti Warren partnered with Newton Community Pride, local businesses, residents, and Alderman Vicki Danberg to install a skating rink in Newton Centre. The Grand Opening, on Dec. 31, 2011, at 11:30 AM, is part of the Mayor's New Year's Open House Celebrations.

The Sheryl Franks Creative Skating Academy will perform at the Opening Ceremony. The rink is free and open to the public from 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM all winter season. Skating is at your own risk, and hockey is prohibited.

The rink is located at the Newton Centre Green, between Centre Street and Langley Road. Call 617-527-8283 for more information.

Support the Newton Public Schools--Give to the Newton Schools Foundation

This holiday season, support Newton's schools by giving to the Newton Schools Foundation (NSF). The NSF is the private fundraising organization that has provided more than 500 grants totaling over $2.5 million to Newton Public School teachers and administrators, and most recently supported the installation of 21st century classroom technology in 42 fifth grade classrooms throughout the city.
