Help Keep Sidewalks Safe During the Winter!

Help Keep Sidewalks Safe During the Winter! Many people in our community depend on being able to walk year round, including children walking to school or the bus, neighbors who can’t drive and mail carriers.  The Bike/Pedestrian Task Force, Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force, League of Women Voters, and PTO Council are working together and need your help.

What you can do:
•         Shovel your sidewalk to bare pavement
•         Clear a three- to four-foot wide path
•         Chop or melt ice
•         Help neighbors who can’t shovel because they are elderly or have a disability
•         Don’t put snow from driveways or walks onto the sidewalk -- $25 fine!
We’re all in this together – Newton depends on neighbors to help neighbors!  For answers to your snow-shoveling questions, a list of volunteers and commercial contractors, and maps of city-cleared routes, visit

or call 617 796-1000.

Interested in passing this information along to neighbors?  Go to http://groups.google.com/group/srtsnewton/files  <keep the sidewalks safe.doc> for flyer or Click here to download a flyer.

And remember, shoveling the sidewalk does not create a legal liability! Contact Lucia Dolan at luciadolan@rcn.com with any questions.

Here’s the play by play so you can plan you’re evening accordingly.

  1. 7:45pm sharp, workout begins

  1. I’ll take you through a wicked fun, “freaky fat loss pumpkin workout” that lasts 35min.

  1. 8:30pm we walk to Union Street for a burn & earn reward of spirits & “finger” foods.

  1. we scare all in attendance because we’re sweaty, gross and in costume.

A little about the Freaky Fat Loss Pumpkin Workout

  • 35 min total body strength workout
  • Uses your body weight & a pumpkin
  • Set to time, so you can go at your own pace
  • Has 3 different levels for beginner, intermediate and advanced
  • You’ll be scared warm for 5 minutes (movement Preparation),
  • You’ll dig a graveyard and wrestle skeletons before the clock strikes midnight and turns you into a pumpkin (not really, but think total body strength training while using a pumpkin) for 20 minutes
  • You’ll run & hide from the Headless Horseman (think quick burst followed by short recovery) while you simultaneously have your guts tightened and squished (think 6 pack abs and stable core) for 5 minutes
  • You’ll finish with a traditional treat minus the calories (static stretching) for 5 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: “Mike, why do I need a Pumpkin? What are we going to do with it?”

A: Great question! The pumpkin is going to serve as resistance. Think of it as a medicine ball you can eat or carve. We’ll use it as a base of support and to push, pull, or twist with. It’ll serve as an example that you can use most any object to exercise with, no matter where you are.

Q: “Mike, why do I Need to Bring a Towel?”

A: Another Great question. You need it because you’re going to sweat.

Q: “If I donate, how much should I donate?”

A: To be honest, whatever you feel comfortable with. It can be $10, $20, $50 a $100, something in between, something greater. Really, whatever you feel good about.

Q: “Can I pay at the event?’

A: You could, but I can’t guarantee you’ll get to workout with us, unless you reserve it online.

Q: “What if I get tired during the workout and need to take a break?”

A: Then take one. You can stop and start whenever you need to. If you need to sit down, then go take a seat. If you just need a breather, then stay where you are until you’re ready to start again. Sound safe and easy? J

Q: “Mike what if I don’t have a costume or I feel uncomfortable wearing one?”

A: Well if you don’t have one and you don’t want to get one, then don’t. Just come wearing orange & black workout clothes ready to participate and learn something new. If you think you’re going to feel uncomfortable wearing a costume, just imagine how uncomfortable I’m going to feel wearing a costume in front of you. (Wink) Seriously though, if you’re going to feel uncomfortable wearing a costume, don’t wear one. Just come as yourself dressed in orange & black workout clothes. It’ll be fun regardless.

Q: “Mike, why do we have to be there at 7:30 and not 7:45?”

A: I really want to impress you and give you an unforgettable experience and workout. If you’re early, you can get comfortable, use the bathroom one last time and make sure we have your waiver and have a spot reserved for you.

Q: “Mike, how do we get a copy of the Freaky Fat Loss Pump-kin Workout you promised us?”

A: Good question. When you complete your donation, you’ll be sent to a thank you page where you can sign up to receive it. Just fill in your name and e-mail address. I’ll e-mail it to you when it’s completed. Easy right?

So if you want to fight holiday season weight gain before it starts, if you want to learn & do something that changes your body and gives you a memorable night with a story to tell, if you want to do your part to make America the fittest country, not the fattest, then make a donation to reserve your spot.

Spook and sweat with you soon
