Help Keep Sidewalks Safe During the Winter!

Help Keep Sidewalks Safe During the Winter! Many people in our community depend on being able to walk year round, including children walking to school or the bus, neighbors who can’t drive and mail carriers.  The Bike/Pedestrian Task Force, Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force, League of Women Voters, and PTO Council are working together and need your help.

What you can do:
•         Shovel your sidewalk to bare pavement
•         Clear a three- to four-foot wide path
•         Chop or melt ice
•         Help neighbors who can’t shovel because they are elderly or have a disability
•         Don’t put snow from driveways or walks onto the sidewalk -- $25 fine!
We’re all in this together – Newton depends on neighbors to help neighbors!  For answers to your snow-shoveling questions, a list of volunteers and commercial contractors, and maps of city-cleared routes, visit

or call 617 796-1000.

And remember, shoveling the sidewalk does not create a legal liability! Contact Lucia Dolan at luciadolan@rcn.com with any questions.
