Newton Symphony Orchestra Family Concert
Newton Symphony Orchestra Family Concert: Sunday January 10th at 3pm at the Rashi Auditorium. The Newton All City Orchestra and two fabulous soloists, winners of the Newton Symphony Orchestra Young Soloists Competition elementary and middle school divisions will perform with the Newton Symphony on the stage at the Rashi Auditorium, conducted by James M. Orent. Mitsuru Yonezaki, student at Bowen Elementary School will play the Carmen Fantasy for violin and orchestra by Sarasate and Sophie Applbaum, student at the Winsor school will play the first movement of the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto. These delightful performers will sweep you into their musical worlds and transport you to new realms.
Students from the Newton All City Orchestra will sit in with NSO members to play the Red Iguana Rhumba and an arrangement of the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.
The program includes music from and for childhood; music you’ll recognize from Fantasia (the dancing hippos) and Fantasia 2000 (the flying whales), as well as favorites by Leroy Anderson and John Philip Souza.
Following the performance audience members can meet the conductor, soloists and members of the orchestras over refreshments. There will be an instrument petting zoo at which children can try playing an instrument.
