Families from each of Newton’s 22 schools, preschool through grade 12, honored more than 800 individual Newton teachers and staff, raising $47,000 to help NSF advance excellence and equity in the Newton Public Schools. Thank you to all participants, and congratulations to the outstanding educators of the Newton Public Schools!

Teachers Participating in Professional Development
While Newton students began their summer break, teachers and administrators were busy honing their craft at the Race and Achievement Summer Institute hosted by Newton Public Schools with funds from Newton Schools Foundation. The two-day conference addressed a broad range of topics related to both the academic and social and emotional aspects of race and student achievement. Sessions included:
  • school response to bias
  • culturally competent communication
  • being a white ally to students of color
  • stereotype threat
  • racial identity development
  • curriculum transformation through a social justice lens
  • culturally responsive teaching
  • affinity for staff of color, and more
The Race and Achievement Summer Institute is part of a broader multi-year, district-wide effort to narrow the achievement gap for students of color. It’s one example of how you are providing Newton educators with new opportunities to extend and deepen their teaching practice.
