Food insecurity is a large issue everywhere in the United States. The USDA has reported that nearly 10% of Massachusetts households experience food insecurity. Many of these families, however, are provided with aid by schools in Newton, as around 12% of students qualify for free or reduced priced meals during the school year. During the summer, these families no longer have the support of the school system.
To combat this concern, The West Suburban YMCA has been selected by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site. The SFSP is a federally funded nutrition program that provides free meals to children ages 18 and under when school is not in session. The West Suburban YMCA is serving summer meals from 12:00pm-1:00pm Monday-Friday till August 16th on our field, through the New Balance Track and is open to anyone 18 and under.
