Supporting the war effort was everyone’s responsibility in 1940s Newton. This flyer from the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company was enclosed with a 1944 Newton phone bill. It reminded customers to donate blood for soldiers and to avoid long-distance calls “after chow and before Taps” so phone lines would be open for “G.I. Joes and G.I. Joans” to call home.
The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company (1883-2000) had six offices in Newton by 1895. The company changed its name to Verizon New England in 2000, after it was acquired by Bell Atlantic.
