On behalf of our Board and Advisors, I am excited to share with you that we are accomplishing what we set out to do, all with thanks to the extraordinary leadership and commitment from this community on behalf of the West Newton Cinema.

Our campaign was kickstarted in April of this year with a remarkable, transformational $5.2 million gift from an anonymous donor. The $5.2 million gift included a $2 million match, to encourage other philanthropic gifts.

To date, our community has come forward with great generosity and leadership, and we are very grateful.  We are so pleased to share that we have met our Phase I goal. In the coming weeks, we plan to purchase West Newton Cinema.

Now, we have officially begun Phase II of our campaign to raise funds for the Cinema’s renovation.  We will announce the Campaign’s leadership and major donors when we have raised 80% of our total campaign goal of $14 million.

We are so grateful to our leadership and major donors, without whom we would not be here today.  We are so thankful to our 900+ supporters for their commitment to our Campaign and their love for the Cinema.

We now have a tremendous opportunity to come together, renovate the building and make it shine, and put in place the kind of programming that will draw people together and bring fresh excitement to the cultural scene in Newton.

The restored, revitalized West Newton Cinema will:

  • Foster social connection through programs and live events, strengthening the resilience of our community.
  • Be a cultural film center for access to independent and foreign films, documentaries and classics, films that can’t be seen anywhere else, like our recent presentations of BEETHOVEN’S NINE and PARADISE.
  • Be a key economic driver for West Newton Square by continuing to attract over 50,000 visitors from Newton and surrounding communities each year, and growing that number.

Newton needs the Cinema for people to gather and connect – a place for all generations, from kids to seniors and everyone in between.

We invite you to join us and be a part of this success. Your support is key to renovating the theater. We cannot do this without you.

To reach our goal of $14 million, we welcome your support and participation. Leadership and major gifts including naming opportunities are key. If you are interested in making a leadership gift, please contact me at elizabeth.heilig@wncfoundation.org.

I think I can say on behalf of everyone in the City of Newton, we thank you for caring so deeply about our Cinema and our community, and for giving back!
