Fall Business Breakfast

October 28 @ 7:30 am - 9:30 am

Fall Business Breakfast is back after two years at the Newton Marriott!

When Jeff Speck published his book “Walkable Cities” ten years ago, the concept that we needed to share our streets and parking spaces with cyclists, pedestrians, or even outdoor diners, felt like blasphemy to some to some and revelatory to others.
“Downtowns are easy to get to but not worth arriving at,” Speck wrote, before proposing design fixes that could reenergize our small businesses, villages and town centers.
One decade later — as our communities and economy emerge from the pandemic — it sometimes feels like we’re back at square one: More of us are driving. Fewer are taking public transit. And we’ve seen empty offices and an increase in vacant storefronts.
But the pandemic changed our communities in interesting ways too: More of us discovered walking during quarantine. More of us are working remotely, especially in our suburbs. And we’ve embraced parklets and outdoor dining.

Speck’s presentation will include a preview of his soon-to-be-published 10th Anniversary Edition of Walkable Cities (with 101 new pages).

He also promises to share with us design fixes for our chamber communities.

And if you haven’t seen Speck speak, you’re in for a treat.

His 2017 presentation at a chamber real estate event is among my all-time favorites. His TED Talks and other videos may make him the most listened-to city planner in the world.

In addition to Speck’s talk on the 28th, I’ll moderate a panel discussion exploring the state of our communities with the municipal managers from our four communities:

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller
Needham Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick
Watertown City Manager George Proakis
Wellesley Executive Director Meghan Jop

Individual tickets and sponsorships are available now, although all of our reserved tables are sold out.
