Hydrogen vs. Electricity for Heating Buildings

Join Nathan Phillips, Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University, for a moderated panel discussion. The session will include a review of new findings in the Roetter/Richardson Hydrogen versus Electricity for Heating Buildings white paper. Heating buildings accounts for about 30% of our Commonwealth’s greenhouse gas emissions. Under the MA 2050 Clean Energy and Climate Plan, emissions from residential heating must be reduced by 47% by 2030 and 95% by 2050. While hydrogen has been portrayed by the gas industry as a way to reduce those greenhouse gas emissions, this session will show why it isn’t the answer for decarbonizing our buildings.
The panelists will be:
Cathy Kristofferson, co-founder of the Pipe Line Awareness Network for the Northeast. She is the co-facilitator of a Hydrogen and Biomethane working group. Cathy is Conservation Commissioner in the Town of Ashby.
Martyn Roetter co-authored the Hydrogen versus Electricity for Heating Buildings white paper. He has a doctorate in nuclear physics. For many years he was a technology and management consultant in the U.S and around the world. He is a member of the Gas Transition Allies.
