Beethoven, Leonore Oveture No. 3
Shostakovich, Cello Concerto No. 1
Lev Mamuya, cello soloist
Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier Suite
Three great composers and one spectacular soloist appear on the New Phil’s first concert of the season. The 1959 Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1, to be performed by Newton’s extraordinary Lev Mamuya as soloist, is considered to be Shostakovich’s finest concerto; rich in powerful musical ideas and extraordinary writing for the solo cello. Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite completes the program.
