Walking Tour Season Opens June 25 in West Newton
August 11 @ 2:01 am
Want to take a closer look at historic sites and landmarks around the City of Newton? Historic Newton is once again presenting walking tours this summer! We’ll be visiting the Mount Ida campus, Newton Cemetery, and more. We also have a special bike tour planned. Information about the tours may be found here.
The first tour of the season takes place Saturday, June 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the West Parish Burying Ground. Established in 1781 as part of Newton’s Second Parish Church, this burying ground is the resting place for some of the city’s earliest residents. Learn about these residents as well as the shifting iconography and material culture of New England’s burying grounds throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Admission is free for this special tour, and registration will be capped at 40 people. Register here.
The West Parish Burying Ground tour is part of “West Newton Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” a weekend of events held in collaboration with the Newton Cultural Alliance at the Allen Center for Arts and Culture at the Nathaniel Allen House in West Newton. Find more information here. On view during the weekend will be Historic Newton’s exhibit about how the Nathaniel Allen’s 19th century school pioneered progressive education in the United States. Some of the information in the exhibit comes from the Allen Family Papers in our Archives.
