WestMetro HOME Consortium Fair Housing Workshop

April 26 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join attorneys from Boston, Massachusetts’ Suffolk School of Law Housing Discrimination Testing Program, in examining the historical role of the real estate industry and government in racial discrimination as well as current trends in housing discrimination. Attorneys will share results from recent research on race and source of income discrimination and discuss how this research reflects America’s history of segregation and the current state of housing. Attorneys will also present information on how to mitigate our implicit biases so that we can collectively ensure that everyone has fair and equal access to housing.

The workshop will begin with remarks by Mayor Ruthanne Fuller of Newton and is hosted by the WestMetro HOME Consortium (WMHC) in honor of Fair Housing Month. WMHC is made up of thirteen communities including the Cities of Newton, Framingham, Waltham, and Watertown, and the Towns of Bedford, Belmont, Brookline, Concord, Lexington, Natick, Needham, Sudbury, and Wayland. Learn more about WMHC at https://www.newtonma.gov/government/planning/housing-community-development/westmetro-home-consortium

Lastly, we invite you to explore the resources listed at the City of Newton’s Fair Housing Month website, including events and workshops, highlights of community organizing in the fight for housing justice as well as creative housing models, and a reflection on where zoning and the state’s recent MBTA Communities bill sits in context of this month.
