Mayor’s Update

I have just sent an update on medical marijuana establishments to the City Council.
Here are the highlights:
I accepted the Marijuana Host Community Agreement Advisory Group recommendations for provisional host community agreements for three additional applicants: MME Newton Retail (MedMen) at 232 Boylston Street in Chestnut Hill, GR Vending MA Newton (Herbology) at 131 Rumford Street in Auburndale, and Union Twist at 1158 Beacon Street in Newton Four Corners. I also agreed with the Advisory Group who did not recommend moving forward with three other applications for marijuana retailers in Newton Four Corners: ARL Healthcare at 1114 Beacon Street, Bloominus at 1136 Beacon Street, and another applicant at the same address, Green Harbor Dispensary at 1136 Beacon Street.
Garden Remedies opened as a medical marijuana dispensary in November 2016 and added adult use retail marijuana sales at its 697 Washington Street location on May 25, 2019 on an appointment only basis. Operations have been smooth with limited impact on the neighborhood, traffic and parking in the area and the Newton Police Department have no concerns at this time. After the initial 90 days of being open, the Special Permit from the City Council allows Garden Remedies to request discontinuation of police details. That request has just been received and the Planning Department is currently evaluating it.

Cypress Tree at 24 Elliot Street has received both a provisional Host Community Agreement (HCA) from me and a special permit from the City Council. They are waiting for licensing approval from the state’s Cannabis Control Commission (CCC).

Ascend Mass has received a provisional HCA from me and will be before the City Council for a special permit this fall (the date has not been set) to open at 58 Cross Street (at the intersection with Washington Street in West Newton). They still need licensing approval from the CCC.

The City of Newton has a limit of 8 marijuana retailers. With these approvals, I have granted six host community agreements. The HCA Advisory Group prefers to meet with a batch of applicants to be able to make relative comparisons among them. Currently, there are no additional applicants.
