Featuring the Community Calendar where everyone can post events happening.
OurNewton.org is a not-for-profit community-building program that publishes everything happy about Newton, MA. We enjoy informing residents of the myriad events happening in Newton, connecting with people for a common good–in person and on social media.
How did we get started?
In 2009, we and other community members gathered at the Newton Boys and Girls Club to hear about a new way to promote civic and community pride: David Crowley, President of Social Capital Inc., spoke about using his internet platform to connect schools, nonprofits, and communities and community organizations.
Many of the attendees were connected to the Newton Public Schools – teachers, administrators, or PTO leaders. It occurred to us that each school was manually laboring over the similar newsletters, with similar information. Wouldn’t it be great to have one place to look for all the same information? Thus, OurNewton.org was born.
We’ve since branched out.
Though we started with the PTO’s, we could see that Newton is a beautiful tapestry of diverse people, organizations and local businesses. We saw the need to let all Newton residents have access, every day, to the incredible events and programs being offered throughout our Garden City. We have a calendar that lists events by the days they are happening, and we have a blog that tells people about lessons, or camps, or volunteer opportunities. We have been sponsored by great Newton institutions such are The NewArt Center, Newton Community Education, Historic Newton, the West Suburban YMCA, the Suzuki School of Music, Lynne LeBlanc, Newton Resident, and Janet Porcaro of Keller Williams Realty. A true community partnership!
We are completely volunteer driven. Everything at OurNewton.org happens because of the dedicated volunteers who see the value in connecting Newton residents to all things Newton. We also partner with wonderful student interns at Lasell College; we could not do what we do without them. If you are looking for a way to connect to more of Newton’s fabulous people and places and things, please consider joining our small but dedicated and enthusiastic staff.
We are proud to say that our newsletter is sent to almost 6,000 people and growing. We LOVE telling Newton residents what’s going on. Can you help us?
