During Women’s History Month, please take a closer look at Margaret Stedman Chaloff, a legendary piano teacher in Newton who taught many of the great jazz pianists of the mid-20th century, among them Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett. She also taught George Wein, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival. Meet two of her former students, Stephany Tiernan of Berklee College of Music and Ran Blake of New England Conservatory, at our Newton History Series program with the Newton Free Library on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. Register here.
This month, we also invite you to learn more about the extraordinary life of Pamela Sparhawk, a woman formerly enslaved in Newton who petitioned the Massachusetts General Court in 1818 to be recognized as heir to her brother’s estate. Visit our online exhibit.
